Facebook and Twitter are not some new technology. In fact, they use fairly old technology but it’s how they use it that’s important. These websites are encouraging social interaction online and much of the communities have an open invitation. The communities are not just made up of friends. Many of the communities developing online are a collection of strangers with common interests. Whether your interest is football, shoes or music there’ll be plenty of communities out there that you can join to get the gossip on the latest trends and transfers.

So what next for your website? You need to think about creating your own community and inviting people to join. Your community is going to attract all of those people with an interest in what your business has to offer. They’re going to visit your community regularly for the latest news, gossip and offers and this is going to translate into traffic and sales. Simple.

Going viral, spreading the word

Social media is a term that encapsulates all social interaction on the Web. Marketing to that group requires you to make your content viral. When someone is browsing your site, you need to provide them with the functionality to share the content with people who also have similar interests. Providing “share this” and “send to a friend” are simple and clearly understood terms used across the Web. The aim of these is for people to encourage their friends to visit your site.

Creating a Facebook and a Twitter account provide you with the means to create another area on the Web where interested people can find out more about what you offer and will perhaps be tempted in with promises of savings, freebies or similar.

Blogging is another way to speak about your website. Setting up a simple blog is straight forward and an easy way to begin spreading the word.

Content needs legs to travel

There are sites on the Web dedicated to promoting new and interesting content. These “social bookmarking” websites such as Digg, Delicious and Reddit are a repository for all that is new. Your website can provide links that enable your visitors to “bookmark” pages of interest.

Consider providing your content in different formats. PDF, audio and video files all travel well and are often passed around via email, social networking websites and video sharing sites such as YouTube.

The opportunities for marketing your business in the online social arena are boundless. If you’re just dipping your toes into this now it can seem daunting but it’s not, we promise. Give us a call or email us and we can spend the time explaining the possibilities for you and what this could mean for your business. It’ll all become clear, very quickly, and before you know it you’ll be tweeting, posting and prodding your way to success.
